2499 (Wokingham) Squadron

2499 Squadron has been in Wokingham since the early 1970s and has built a solid reputation as a good all round Squadron. The Squadron makes the most of its excellent location especially during the summer months and maintains an active training programme.

You will join the Squadron as part of an "Intake" of new recruits on an Induction Night. These are usually the first Monday or Wednesday of the month.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Cadets from Thames Valley Wing have been putting themselves in the news at their first weeklong Media Camp held at Pirbright Camp in Surrey.

The cadets learnt lots of new skills including photography, copy writing, newsletters, film making and presentation skills during the week as they provided media cover for the Wing’s annual greens camp. Continue reading

Air Cadet Diamond Jubilee Awards

76 uniformed members of staff from Thames Valley Wing have been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

The members of staff were presented with the medal by Air Commodore Paul Lyall OBE of the Joint Services Defence College during a high profile parade at Dalton Barracks; in front of family, friends and guests. Continue reading

Next Stop The Olympics For Thames Valley Cadets?

The success of the Thames Valley Wing sports teams continued recently with a fantastic haul of trophies at the recent inter-Wing athletics competition.

Held against the backdrop of the forthcoming Olympics, and with an Olympic torch in attendance, carried by the Regional Sports Officer, Squadron Leader Costin, the competition saw cadets from across the South West Region pitted against one another to win the various pieces of silverware on offer and also to gain a place on the team to compete against the other Regions in the Corps later this year at RAF Cosford. Brize Clean Sweep in Annual Sports Awards

Brize Norton Air Cadets have been crowned championsas the high flying sportsmen and women from across the Thames Valley were recognised during a special ceremony at the Wing Athletics.

Throughout the sporting seasonthe Wing Sports Officer, Flight Sergeant Barry Tweddle, and his team keep a record of cadets and squadronparticipation in sport.In addition to ranking the cadets onon their attendance, the Sports Team also look at the cadet and squadrons commitment, dedication, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for sports. Britwell Shine in the Sun

Britwell Air Cadets were in the silverware after winning the lions share of the medals and trophies at the Thames Valley Wing Athletics Championships held at Abingdon’s Tilsey Park.

Over 200 cadets and 50 staff took part in glorious sunshine; battling it out to be crowned champions. 11 events were on offer across 5 age categories headed up by Flight Sergeant Barry Tweddle, the Wing Sports Officer. Continue reading

Canoeing and Climbing Taster for Thames Valley Wing

On a very soggy Sunday in April, cadets and staff from across Thames Valley Wing took to the water and the wall at Adventure Dolphin in Pangbourne.

Despite the torrential rain, several cadets and staff made the trip to Adventure Dolphin in Pangbourne for a day of taster sessions in canoeing and climbing. Organised by FS Chris Harding (ATC), the cadets spent half the day learning some basic skills in a canoe on the river Thames, and the other half on the indoor climbing wall at the centre testing their climbing skills. Opposites Attract in a Classic 5-a-Side Battle

Cadets from Chipping Norton, based in North Oxfordshire, and cadets from Earley in Berkshire have proved themselves best of the bunch in a thrilling 5-a-side tournament held at RAF Benson.

28 teams from across the Thames Valley started the day with a series of league competitions for the male and female trophies before being narrowed down to the top 12 teams for the nail biting play off stage. Continue reading

Speedy Cadets Lead The Pack

A 15 person strong sports team from Thames Valley Wing notched up another fantastic performance at the inter-Wing cross country competition held recently on the outskirts of Winchester.

The 3 mile course was a demanding one for all participants as it covered a mixture of flat and hilly terrain but the biggest challenge of all were the other teams who came from all over the South West of England, the furthest travelled having come from Cornwall, the nearest from Hampshire itself. Wokingham Squadron and the Puma celebrate

Celebrating a 40th birthday is an important occasion, especially when it is an Air Cadet Squadron and a helicopter force that are doing the celebrating.

It is 40 years since 2499 (Wokingham) Squadron of the ATC was formed, a year which also saw the Aérospatiale Puma HC1 helicopter enter service with the RAF. In celebration of this event the current staff and cadets of 2499 Squadron were invited to RAF Benson, home of the Puma for a day of visits and flying. Continue reading

Thames Valley Powers To Pool Success

A team of cadets drawn from across the Thames Valley area triumphed in the pool and came away with the silverware following the recent inter-Wing swimming competition which was held at HMS Temeraire in Portsmouth.

The competition was tough as the team was pitted against others drawn from across the South West of the UK including from as far afield as Plymouth, Cornwall and the Isle of Wight but the Thames Valley contingent proved themselves to be very much up to the mark. Continue reading
