Finalists for Thrive Awards Announced
The finalists for the Thames Valley Wing Thrive Awards have now been announced. The Awards fall into the following categories and all nominations came from their peers.
Outstanding Civilian Instructor – The person who has made the most outstanding contribution over the past year.
Ambassador – The individual or team who through the virtue of hard work, character and representation have raised the profile of the ATC.
Valiant Volunteer – For consistent and extraordinary efforts in helping others, above and beyond the call of duty.
Unsung Hero – The individual whose contribution often goes unnoticed but without it their Squadron would fail to deliver the effect it achieves.
Top Team Award – awarded to the group (informal or formal) that has achieved the greatest positive impact. Continue reading

- Class 1a: Aviation – for cadets aged 16 or under
- Class 1b: Aviation – for cadets aged 16 or over
- Class 1c: Aviation – for adult staff and civilian committee members
- Class 2a: The ACO and its people – for cadets aged 16 or under
- Class 2b: The ACO and its people – for cadets aged 16 or over
- Class 2c: The ACO and its people – for adult staff and civilian committee members
Junior leaders Course 16
The Junior Leaders course is a physically demanding and mentally challenging course that runs from September to Easter every year. It is the highest and most challenging level of the leadership courses open to the ATC. The course focuses on developing leadership skills such as command and control, planning, time management, confidence and reaction to unexpected events. It does this through advanced fieldcraft skills such as section attacks, defensive operations and various patrols to assess individuals in 3 roles; Section commander, Section 2IC and a subordinate. Cadets Lend a Hand at Reading Half Marathon
Bright and early on Sunday morning the vast army of volunteers headed for Reading’s Madejski Stadium, which included many brave faces from Burghfield and Earley Air Cadet Squadrons. For the third year running 2402 Burghfield Squadron has been an active partner in this Marathon. Continue reading
Woodley & Earley Air Cadets Reach New Heights
Twenty-five Air Cadets scaled new heights last weekend when they took part in their first climbing lessons at Reading Climbing Centre thanks to a Sportivate grant.
Sportivate is a Lottery funded London 2012 legacy project that gives young people opportunities to discover new sports and, from the reactions of the cadets from Woodley and Earley, climbing seems to have really taken off! Continue reading

Cadets Take Stage at First World War Commemoration
A party of 30 Air Cadets and Staff from Thames Valley Wing were amongst the hundreds who gathered in Reading town centre for a county-wide service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The multi-faith service held at Reading Minster Church heard words of peace and remembrance from religious leaders across several faiths. Continue reading
Running to Success at Reading Marathon
Each year many squadrons from across the wing will take party in charity events to raise funds or support their local communities. 26 cadets from 1996 (Earley) Squadron were joined by colleagues from 2402 (Burghfield) & 1116 (Woodley) Squadrons’ and ran a left-kit marque at the Reading Half Marathon on Sunday 2nd March. Despite the cold, the wind and the drizzle there were smiles a’plenty for the 10,000 runners who left their gear in the tent, as well as congratulations. Continue reading
