ach year Thames Valley Wing holds its Inter Squadron bowling competition at RAF Brize Norton where the squadrons get together before the Christmas break with each squadron been allowed to enter 2 teams. With the event always being a good day out for the cadets and staff this year’s event was no exception with everyone enjoying themselves and some good scores been achieved at the end of the day.
459 (Windsor) Squadron provide their story on how the competition went for the squadron on the day.
“A very early morning saw 459 start the journey to RAF Brize Norton to begin the defence of the Mixed Team Trophy. After a relatively shaky start, the cadets decided that the OC was a jinx and banished him from the lanes! From that action, the team, consisting of CWO Whaqar Hussain in his last ever appearance for 459 before he ages out, FS Oliver Blackley, Cdt Beth Appleton and Cdt Amulya Sannapureddy, went on to decimate all competition. With the OC sneakily glancing from afar, strike after strike went on ending with a total points haul of 2070 which, for the third year in a row, meant we retained the Mixed Team Trophy! Not only had 459 become 4 x Champions (We had won the boys trophy 4 years ago as well!), we were also second overall, beating many squadrons with two teams in the competition! Add to that the CWO and FS being 3rd and second in the individual competition respectively and it was an amazing day for the Mighty 459! Some say that this win was down to team spirit and that banishing the jinx of the OC, was a stroke of genius!”
With a 40 point lead however this year saw 2121 (Abingdon) Squadron crowned as the bowling champions for 2013. Following closely in 2nd place was 459 (Windsor) Squadron and in 3rd place, 2477 (Britwell) Squadron. All the squadrons that entered did extremely well and the full results are listed below.
